Locals Inch Closer to USTA National Indoor Championship Glory

The USTA National Indoor Championships continued on Tuesday at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows, as the tournament’s fields continued to be reduced. The Men’s Open Singles draw were the early matches of the day, as two semifinal bouts took place. 

In the first, Josh Mactaggart of New York, N.Y. outlasted Alexander Steinroeder of Holliston, Mass., 6-4, 3-6, 6-2, to move into the championship match. In the final, he will meet Max J. Schnur of Richmond, Va. The second-seeded Schnur shook off a one-set deficit to knock off Dejon Bivens of Charlotte, N.C. 2-6, 7-5, 6-2 to make his way into the title match.

The championship in the Women’s Open Singles field is also set, as Garden City’s Alexa Graham will meet Emily Hamlin of Fairfield, Conn. The second-seeded Graham was able to get past Ariana Rodriguez of the Bronx 6-4, 6-3, while Hamlin defeated the top-seeded Rima Asatrian of Florham Park, N.J. 6-3, 6-4.

The Men’s Open Doubles field played its quarterfinal matches on Tuesday morning with the semifinal matches to be played later this afternoon.

Robert Ferrante of Yorktown Heights, N.Y. & Michael Mattelson of Bedford Hills, N.Y. defeated Tyler Hoffman of Sayville & Brandon Stone of Melville 6-3, 4-6, 7-5 in an excellent three-set match. The third-seeded duo moves on to the semis where they will play John & Bill Cook of Kings Park. The Cook’s received a walkover into the final four.

The other semifinal will be between New Orleans native Chi-Shan Jao & Unadilla N.Y. native Ian Van Cott facing Ben Marks & Daniel McGuire of Huntington. The eighth-seeded duo of Jao & Van Cott knocked off Krasimir Kolev of Astoria & Tsimafey Senkevich of Brooklyn 6-2, 6-3, while Marks & McGuire took down Mitchell Dobek of Westfield, Mass. & Michael Wallace of Mount Vernon, N.Y. 6-4, 6-3.

The Women’s Open Doubles field had two semifinal contests still to be played on Tuesday afternoon. Rodriguez and her partner Taylor Ng of Haddonfield, N.J. will take on the third-seeded duo of Rachel Lim of Briarcliff Manor, N.Y. & Lilian Poling of West Point, N.Y., while the top-seeded pair of Astatrian and Basking Ridge, N.J.’s Kelly Williford will meet Elizabeth Tsvetkov of Brooklyn & Sabrina Xiong of Fresh Meadows.

The semifinals of the Mixed Doubles field will be played around 5:00 p.m. this evening. Click here to check out those draw results as well as all of the other fields’ results.
