Every USTA League captain has the same dream … get together a group of friends, sign up, play the regular season, win the Long Island playoffs, win the Eastern Sectionals and make it to the National Championships. Jonathan Klee was no different when he started his 4.5 team out of Rockville Racquet Club 15 years ago.

The Tri-Level League, which is played on three doubles courts—one at the 3.5 Level, one at the 4.0 Level and one at the 4.5 Level—wrapped up in October and November. The winning men’s team was captained by Gabe Moreira & Mitch Low.

Called "The Third Game of Tennis," One-On-One Doubles held its 11th annual prize money tournament at the ITA Coaches Convention in December. The tournament's compact, round-robin format allowed for every player in the draw to compete against three opponents in short sets (first to win four games, no-ad scoring).

The New York Athletic Club (NYAC) men’s tennis team recently won its fifth championship during the National Open Team Championships at the Darling Tennis Center in Las Vegas. The tournament benefited the American Cancer Society.

Congratulations to Long Island’s 6.0 and 8.0 Mixed-Doubles teams who both won at Sectionals and will be advancing to the National Championships. The 6.0 team played out of Christopher Morley and is captained by Darlene Sotomayor. The 8.0 team played out of Long Beach Tennis and is captained by Andrew Camacho. Good luck to both teams!

The USTA season is quickly approaching! All teams had to have at least eight players registered by March 1st to be put into the schedules which are now being worked on. Schedules will be distributed at the Captains Cocktail Party, set for Thursday, April 16 at 6:30 p.m. at the Crest Hollow Country Club on Jericho Turnpike in Woodbury, N.Y.

The USTA has announced that Mutsumi Shirai and Kline Sack of New York City, are among the 24 players who will represent the U.S. at the inaugural ITF Young Seniors World Team Championships, the senior equivalent of tennis’ Davis Cup and Fed Cup competitions.

Before I give the league report for this issue, I wanted to take a minute to honor a very special woman: Susan Alvy. Susan lost her battle with cancer on Nov. 10. She was the manager of Rockville Racquet, a Long Island board member for the USTA League, winner of the Hy Zausner Lifetime Achievement Award, along with being someone whose friendship I valued.

The USTA has announced it will be adding same-gender couples’ doubles tournaments to its 2015 adult competition tennis calendar. The groundbreaking announcement opens the door to new play opportunities for same-sex spouses, those in civil unions, domestic partners, and spousal equivalents, making the USTA’s popular adult competition more diverse and inclusive.

Two more teams from USTA Leagues representing Long Island have qualified for the USTA Adult League Nationals. The recently formed Sportime Massapequa Women's 3.0 55+ USTA team came in first place in Albany at the USTA Sectionals this past weekend, are now headed to the Nationals in Arizona the end of October.

In the close knit community of Bayport-Blue Point on Long Island, there's a hidden gem within the area … a tennis club that has had 11 teams make it to the USTA National Championships. This year at Eastern Athletic Clubs (EAC), another team of tennis players, the Women's 3.0 team, fought long and fought hard and have advanced to the Nationals.
