The USTA has announced today that it has passed new rules governing competition for 10-and-under tennis tournaments. The new rules require that 10-and-under tournaments be played using slower-moving and lower-bouncing balls, on smaller courts and utilizing shorter, lighter racquets.

Two Long Islanders, Julia Elbaba and Shaun Bersnstein, will play their first round matches in the Junior U.S. Open on Friday, Sept. 3. Elbaba will face number two-seeded Lin Zhu of China in her first round match. Bernstein will face Augusto Laranjo of Brazil, the 10th seed, in his first round match.

The USTA has announced that it will host a new U.S. Open Wild Card Playoff to award a men’s and women’s main draw singles wild card into the 2010 U.S. Open. Thirteen-year-old Mia Vecchio has reached new heights ... literally. Now up on the Long Island Expressway by Grand Avenue is a billboard with Mia's photo and the message "Hey NY, If She Can't Do It, No One Can." It's a very exciting day for the Vecchio family, who have had this plan in the works for the last few months.

Tennis Hall of Famer, native New Yorker and former world number one-ranked player John McEnroe has announced that Nike has agreed to become the first official corporate partner of the John McEnroe Tennis Academy, which will open in mid-September at the new $19 million Sportime at Randall’s Island in New York City.

Daniel B. Dwyer, a managing partner at the Point Set Indoor Racquet Club in Oceanside, N.Y., and a past president of the USTA Eastern section, died suddenly of a heart attack on May 25. He is survived by his daughter Kimberly, son Shawn and three grandchildren.

Tennis Hall of Famer, native New Yorker and former world number one John McEnroe has announced that he will open and direct the John McEnroe Tennis Academy, with its inaugural, full-year programs commencing just after the 2010 U.S. Open. The McEnroe Academy will be housed at the new $18 million Sportime at Randall’s Island Tennis Center in New York City. Sportime, owner of 13 tennis and fitness clubs throughout New York State, will operate the club and will partner with McEnroe in the operation of the John McEnroe Tennis Academy.
