As the 2011 New York State Public High School Athletic Association Tournament kicked off, Long Island representatives gave a strong showing on day one. Between six singles and six doubles matches, Nassau and Suffolk County combined together had eight wins. In singles play, Nassau’s three representatives, second seed Josh Levine of Cold Spring Harbor, along with Brendan Henry of Farmingdale, and Zachary Morris of Garden City, all secured their wins with relative ease in straight sets. Jeremy Dubin of Southampton was Suffolk’s only representative moving on to the second round, advancing in straight sets as well. Suffolk’s Brandon Stone of Walt Whitman and Zain Ali of Half Hollow Hills East came up short in their hard-fought matches. They will now compete in the consolation draw.

In doubles play, Nassau’s Doron Saraf & Jared Lewis of Great Neck North, along with Conor Mullins & Jon Paris of Cold Spring Harbor were able to advance in straight sets. Matching Nassau’s two wins were Suffolk’s team of Chris Hunter & Eric Bertuglia from Half Hollow Hills East, and Felipe Reis & Henry Lee of the Ross School, also advancing in straight sets. Nassau’s J.J. Tauil & Dan Grinshteyn of Hewlett along with Suffolk’s Jason Quintana & Dylan Quintana of Sachem, were upset in the first round. They will now battle in the consolation draw.

Long Island looks to keep its competition going as they take the courts at USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center on Friday for day two at the state tournament.
