Long Island players continued their stellar performance on day two of the 2011 New York State Public High School Athletic Association tournament as Nassau County’s Josh Levine of Cold Spring Harbor, the number two seed, and Zachary Morris from Garden City both moved into the semifinals of the main draw singles competition. Levine and Morris were joined by Farmingdale’s Brendan Henry and Southampton’s Jeremy Dubin in the quarterfinal round as all four players won their round of 16 matches in straight sets.

Levine came through with a 6-2, 6-3, win in the round of 16 after fighting back from a 0-3 deficit in the second set. He regained the match momentum after breaking serve in the fourth game of the second set and won six consecutive games to come out the victor. In his quarterfinals encounter, Levine took on fellow Long Islander Dubin. Despite great efforts by Dubin to suppress Levine’s attacking game, the number two seed proved too powerful with a 6-2, 6-3 victory.

The quarterfinal match between Morris and the number five seed, Alex Tsai from Binghamton, N.Y. was the thriller match of the day. After swiftly winning his round of 16 match, 6-1, 6-3, Morris was forced to battle hard against a talented Tsai. After losing the first set 6-3, Morris quickened the pace of the match by coming out with an attacking, serve and volley game to win the second set 6-2. The third set was a close affair with both players managing to hold serve. However, after Tsai’s injury timeout at 5-5, Morris won the next two games to secure the win.

Long Island also remained strong in doubles action as four teams reached the quarterfinals round. The pairings of Felipe Reis & Henry Lee from Ross along with Chris Hunter & Eric Bertuglia of Half Hollow Hills East won their matches in straight sets. The other two pairings of J.J. Tauil & Dan Grinshteyn from Hewlett and Doron Saraf & Jared Lewis from Great Neck North were forced into third sets.

In singles consolation action, Half Hollow East High School's Zain Ali overcame his round of 16 opponent, 6-1, 6-1 before being knocked out in the quarterfinals. The doubles pairing of Jason & Dylan Quintana from Sachem High School East moved into the semifinals of the doubles consolation draw.

As the tournament continues on day three, Levine and Morris will take to the courts and look to secure an all Long Island final.
