First place was on the line last night at Sportime Stadium at Randalls Island in a match between two World TeamTennis rivals, the New York Sportimes and the Washington Kastles. The Sportimes, who came in with a record of 7-3, were knocked out of the semifinals of last year's World TeamTennis Championship by the Kastles, and were looking to move into sole possession of first place with a win. The Sportimes did just that with wins in men's singles, women's singles and mixed-doubles, and came up with a 23-18 victory.

The Sportimes lost the first two matches of the night as in men's doubles, Leander Paes & Bobby Reynolds of the Kastles defeated Robert Kendrick & Jesse Witten, 5-4 and in women's doubles, Rennae Stubbs & Angela Haynes defeated Ashley Harkelroad & Abigail Spears, 5-4. After those two defeats, the Sportimes took control, winning the remaining three sets and the overall match. In men's singles, Jesse Witten defeated Bobby Reynolds, 5-3. In mixed-doubles, Robert Kendrick & Abigail Spears defeated Leander Paes & Rennae Stubbs, 5-4, and in the evening's final match, Abigail Spears sealed the victory for the Sportimes with a 5-1 win over Angela Haynes.

The Sportimes home season concludes with a match on Monday, July 19th at 7:00 p.m. when they face the New York Buzz. The Buzz will be bringing their star, Martina Hingis, while the Sportimes will counter with both of their stars in John McEnroe and Kim Clijsters. Come out and join Long Island Tennis Magazine for a great night of World TeamTennis action.
