Great Neck North, Massapequa Win Season Openers

Hicksville Edges MacArthur To Start 2016

The Blazers of Great Neck North got its 2016 campaign off to a winning start on Wednesday afternoon, defeating Port Washington 5-2 in Conference I action.

Ashley Yu and Margaret Hayakin led the way with a 3-6, 6-2, 6-3 comeback win over Sophie Lampl & Tiffany McGowan in first doubles to secure the Great Neck North victory.

Elsewhere in Conference 1, Jericho edged Oyster Bay 5-2 to open up its season. Wheatley moved past Herricks 5-2 in Conference II-A action.

Massapequa won its season opening match on Wednesday, moving past Valley Stream Central 6-1

The Chiefs were led by Daniela Snyder, who fought back from a set down to defeat Chinonye Okoli, winning the final set 7-5, in second singles to help push Massapequa to the victory.

Also in Conference III-B, Hicksville snuck out a 4-3 victory over MacArthur, and it was the doubles play that anchored the victory.

MacArthur would win two of the three singles matches, but Hicksville would take the second, third and fourth doubles flights all in straight sets. The match would come down to the final fourth doubles match, a 7-5, 6-1 Hicksville victory.

In two other tightly-contested matches on Wednesday, Plainedge defeated Farmingdale 4-3 and Malverne edged West Hempstead 4-3.
