On Monday, the Australian Open announced that its prize money in 2019 will be jumping to AUD $60.5 million (about $42.7 million dollars), an increase of about 10 percent from last year.

The tournament announced new upgrades the to the facilities to better suit the needs of its players:

“We want to ensure they feel at home here and that they have the best possible environment to prepare for their on-court performance,” said Craig Tiley, Australian Open tournament director. “We also want to ensure they have spaces to relax with their team, friends and family.”

A new series of initiatives will be in play this year as the tournament is instituting a 25-second serve clock for all main draw matches, electronic review systems on all courts, a heat stress index and expanding the women’s qualifying draw from 96 to 128 players.

“We’ve always prided ourselves on listening to the players, and this year we’ve taken our consultation to a whole new level,” added Tiley. “Our team has spent a lot of time this year talking to players, coaches and their teams about what’s important to them, what they like and what changes they want to see.

From these discussions, held at tournaments around the world, we’ve come up with some changes we know the players want, including the serve clock and electronic review on all match courts, making conditions more consistent across the precinct.”
