It was another successful weekend for some local college tennis programs here on Long Island as the dominant runs of New York Institute of Technology (NYIT) and Adelphi continued.

The Northeast-10 final would come down to one final match, and Rebecca Fakas delivered for the Adelphi Panthers, rallying from a set down to beat Victoria Barbetta of Stonehill 3-6, 6-4, 6-2 at first singles and clinch Adelphi’s third straight conference title.

The Adelphi senior was named the most Outstanding Player of the NE10 Championship for the second straight year.

Adelphi finishes the season at 14-1.

The Bears of NYIT took home its sixth consecutive East Coast Conference (ECC) championship by beating previously undefeated Queens College 5-4 in Saturday’s final.

With the overall match tied at 4-all, it was up the Bears’ Ivana Andric, the conference’s Rookie of the Year, hung on to beat Laura Ortega Jover 6-4, 3-6, 6-2 at third singles to clinch the victory.

“I couldn’t be more proud of the women playing today,” head coach Owen Kassimir told ECCSports.org. “They played with heart and stayed tough until the end. I knew it would come down to the final match. Ivana stayed steady throughout the match and finished strong to clinch.”
