There will be a new Nassau County champion in 2018 as Syosset and Hewlett are set to square off in the county final on Monday afternoon at Eisenhower Park, after both teams won their respective semifinals on Thursday afternoon.

Hewlett snapped the 31-match winning streak in a 5-2 upset victory over top-seed Port Washington, while Syosset came back to defeat Roslyn 4-3.

“I’m extremely proud of all the girls. They are really coming together as a team, always supporting each other on and off the court and it’s translating to even more success for the team,” said Syosset head coach Shai Fisher. “Roslyn is a very talented and well-coached team so we know a victory over them never comes easy.”

The Braves trailed 2-3 with two flights remaining on Thursday, when Caroline Lee completed her three-set win over Rena Zervakos, earning Syosset the first singles point with a 6-0, 6-7(4), 6-1 win.

That left the match to be determined by fourth doubles, and Sanya Jolly and Jenna Koeppel delivered. The pair hung on to win 6-3, 6-3 against Sophia Remnek and Skylar Schuman to send the Braves to the county final.

“Once we realized we were the deciding match, we still kept our composure, and never stopped playing to win,” said Koeppel. “It was definitely difficult to focus with everyone cheering but I’m proud that we did not let that affect us and were able to win.”
