Wheatley and Friends Academy squared off in the first-ever Nassau County Boys’ Small School Team Championship on Monday afternoon at Eisenhower Park with a spot in the Long Island Championship on the line.
The Wildcats of Wheatley continued their undefeated season by knocking off Friends Academy 4-1, improving to 16-0 and booking its spot in Wednesday’s Long Island Championship.
“Our team responded well to the in-game adjustments today,” said Wheatley head coach Herman Lim. “That’s the key right there. Figuring out strengths and weaknesses on the opponent’s side, and just making adjustments on the fly, that is what all the singles players are doing well.”
Wheatley’s singles play led the way as Kavin Shukla, Aaron Raja and Saje Menon notched victories at first, second and third singles, respectively.
Rahul Dawar & Ilan Klein posted a 6-2, 6-4 victory at first doubles to round out the scoring for Wheatley and clinch their team’s win.
“My serve and my partner’s poaching stood out to me personally,” said Klein when asked what made the duo successful on Monday. “We worked really well together.”
Wheatley is not resting on its laurels though, and the team made sure to emphasize there is still work to be done this season.
“The job isn’t done,” said Dawar. “That’s all there is to say.”
Wheatley now awaits the winner of the Suffolk County Small School Championship which will be played between Bayport-Blue Point and Shoreham-Wading River on Tuesday afternoon.
“Whoever it may be that we face next, I’m sure they’re going to be a strong team, so we’ll make sure our guys are ready,” said Lim.
The Long Island Small School Championship is scheduled for Wednesday at Casamento Park in Bay Shore.
